I just moved to Washington State and upgraded from a 1 bedroom apartment with free-for-all parking spaces to a 3 bedroom townhouse with a 2 car garage. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to downsize again. Garage = Life.
I just wanted to ramble (helps me think) and maybe get your guys’ (had a southern acquaintance once attempt to use this term instead of the resounding souther “Yall’s ”, and it was quite funny) opinion on future plans.
(Not my garage pictured above, FYI, that’s why I applied credit. D on’t you see? Or did you just skip over the caption because it’s not entirely relevant here? tisk tisk) (... actually, I’m not sure that’s the correct credit...)

Sports Car:
Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec - sold
BMW M2 Competition - current
Of the two cars I’ve owned, I like to say I want to own this thing for 10+ years and maybe never sell it. Well I ended up putting 120k miles on the Genesis in 4-5 ish years and had enough wheel/suspension issues that I couldn’t get anyone to fix that I had enough and sold it to a coworker. Thankfully he’s enjoying it now and either fixed or doesn’t notice the high speed steering wheel vibration I was having trouble coping with.
I miss the Genesis; it had great hydraulic steering and I wasn’t afraid to provoke it from losing grip because I knew I could control it. The M2C is frightening to me at times, maybe because I’m just not use to it yet. I miss the NA engines’ noise and predictability o f the throttle.
Despite my recollections , I retain that the M2C is still a much better car and sports car. I’m keeping this thing for 10+ years for sure, and 1.5 years flew by fast. 25 k miles already, uh oh...
What’s interesting is that the M2C has made me less of a yobo (to use the english term). I took it to the Tail of the Dragon in 32 degree weather and didn’t get the back loose at all.
When I bought it, the practicality of the M2C is what I needed. I work from home now (and admittedly mostly did before too ) and have a stablemate that’s middle name is practicality. Never know when the work situation will change, so I do always want something that I won’t be afraid to put commuting miles on (see below).
Porsche 911 T or GT3 - future?
Porsche 981 GT4 or 718 GT4 - future?
I need a pay bump to afford these cars, but I dream of moving up to Porsche; they got me
. A used GT4 might be in reach.
People have said that the GT4 is more tied down and less of a hooligan than the M2C, but based on my driving style changes I think this might
jive
.
I couldn’t possibly buy the new M3/ M4 with that hideous grill, so I’m probably not st aying with ///M .

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 - future?
Ford Bronco - future?
Here’s where things get interesting...
After moving to WA, I want to own kayaks and be able to take our bikes places. Yes, as you’ll probably tell me I don’t need anything this serious to handle that, but... but... they’re just cool and I want one. Also want to try overlanding, but not sure I will get that serious. I’ve test drove the ZR2 twice and really liked it. This vehicle needs to be able to commute too just incase my work situation changes; I think both can handle that. You’re probably right, i t’s not the sensible choice...
Any other suggestions?
Garage art suggestions? (currently renting)

3-car?
Currently, I’d say I want my old MR2 back, my 914 to work on, and my i3 to drive. But if I’d have to take longer trips, I’d want one of my E60s back.
Those were good cars.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

If I was going to buy two more cars... I’d buy a motorcycle and a truck.

If I had a third car to complement my Miata and STi, it would probably be something with a v8 for sure. Having some nice NA smooth power and decent highway comfort would be ideal. Neither of my cars are very fun on long distance trips. The Subaru does alright, especially if there is dirt or snow involved along the way. But going above 75 absolutely TRASHES my gas mileage and the suspension beats me up. Not to mention the 180,000 miles that scares me from doing real long trips lol. C5 Z06 would probably be a good sweet spot.

I’m jelly you’re in WA. I’m trying to get moved up there. Gee, it’s tough changing jobs right now. Thanks, ‘rona.
Have you driven p-cars? They’re very different from M2's. A little after I got my (now gone) 997, my co-worker got an M2 DCT and offered me to drive it. It was nice, but it didn’t really blow me way like I expected. I much preferred the 12-years-older Porsche.
They all feel pretty different too. The Carrera T’s and GT3's are exciting, but the creature comforts of the Carreras are amazing. I’d say try them all, but also throw in the GTS 2.5 in there. Yeah, they don’t sound the same, but they are monstrously quick. A tune will make it the quickest Cayman you can get, period. Also, the 992 is incredible. A base 992 Carrera looks pretty damn good.
I currently have an Acura MDX A-spec and my old 7.3. The Acura is Mrs. Saracen’s car, though. I sold the 997 and was looking at other options, but since I barely drive now I’m just going to acquire after we relocate. I want a fast wagon . After that, it’ll be time to add another Porsche that I will hold on to for much longer . So I guess I’ll be having a four car garage.

My contention with a truck as a commuter is that there doesn’t seem to be much use in commuting with something that gets worse mileage than your M2. Perhaps if only to keep the miles off, but it’s an expensive way to do so.
Consider a smaller , AWD crossover for your kayaking and whatnot. Better fuel econom y, carry four adults , and possibly cheaper to insure. You’ll find it easier to park in the townhome Lyfe as well. I have a pickup but I use it for pickup stuff, not recreation (anymore). Without a big yard and a fixer-upper ancient home to maintain, that pickup is just gonna go unused 350 days a year outside of commuting.
If your wife wants a 3, I'd say do what she wants.

My current 3 car garage is:
2017 Skoda Octavia VRS (DD, commuter, longhaul)
2013 Toyota GT86 (track toy, backup commuter when the wife has the Skoda for some reason)
2004 Mitsubishi Pajero V6 (farm hack, junk hauler, stump puller, occasional actual offroad rig)
Plus the wife has a Leaf. But that’s not “mine”, and it lives at her office because reasons. So technically it’s not part of my garage. Also “3 car garage” in this instance actually means “2 car garage and one bay of the shed”, but whatever.
Given my current financial situation that’s not something I could improve on much, so future state will look a lot like current.
The Skoda’s racking up a lot of miles as I have a 100 mile roundtrip commute, so it’s probably only going to last me another 2-3 years, but to be honest my only objection to same again would be that it’s same again!
The 86 is now out of warrantee so it may see some mods. However I may also buy a dedicated track rat / project car next year when the house and garden renovations are done (which I suppose makes it a 4 car garage, but I’m saying projects don’t count). In which case it’ll get swapped out for a longhaul GT. Possibly I’ll go modern classic with a 635 or 500SL, or possibly I’ll go slightly more recent with an XKR or Maserati.
The Paj is with me till it rusts out or breaks something expensive. But it’s in good nick for its age, doesn’t do a lot of miles even if they’re hard ones, and lives indoors, so that may be a while.

I haven’t driven a P car , got some time till I’m there yet . I’m also worried about the 911 handling characteristics (backing off the throttle mid corner on a mountain road because I saw a rock or something in the road and having the back end spear me off the road ) and if they’ll replace the wonderful current 718/Cayman with an electric version by the time I’m ready to pull the trigger.
I’m not totally against the 4-cyl Cayman.
I’d say the M2C is a definite step forward from the old M2. Did you make sure you took it out of efficient/comfort mode? I test drove a M2 before I ordered the M2C and wasn’t really that impressed but thought that plus all the improvements would make it worthwhile; thankfully I won that bet.
Maybe if you’re used to GT3s or supercars the M2 might not uncork your fizzy, but I like it. Electric steering sucks, but I guess I’ve gotten used to it at this point.
